His education includes complex trauma of the foot and ankle, ankle and rearfoot arthroscopy, sports medicine of the lower extremity, wound care and diabetic limb salvage,  joint implants, cosmetic forefoot surgery, and surgical correction of  foot and ankle deformities. He is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Podiatric Medicine, and an Affiliate of the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons.

Biography

Dr. Sunny J. Patel, DPM, FACPM, AAENS received his double bachelor’s degrees in Biology and Sociology from the University of Virginia and his medical degree in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He completed an all-encompassing Reconstructive Foot & Ankle Surgery residency  program at Drexel University College of Medicine/Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, where he served as chief resident in his final year before returning back to his hometown of Richmond to serve his community’s foot and ankle needs. 

Dr. Patel is originally from Chesterfield, Virginia. Dr. Patel graduated from the prestigious Chesterfield County Mathematics and Science High School at Clover Hill in Chesterfield, Virginia in 2006. He currently resides in Glen Allen, Virginia with his wife and son.

  • Dr. Sunny J. Patel, DPM, FACPM, AAENS began podiatric training at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, PA in August of 2010 and graduated May 2014

  • Degree study consisted of two years of didactic courses and two years of clinical training in all aspects of medicine and foot and ankle specialization.

  • A 496-bed level 1 trauma hospital 
  • Multidisciplinary team of Podiatry, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Occupational and Physical Therapy.

  • Performed complicated reconstructive limb salvage procedures on diabetic patients as a means to prevent lower extremity amputations

  • Working closely with the occupational and physical therapist the team had positive preliminary outcomes.​

  • A three year program which conveys a graduated system of education, from simple fore-foot to complicated rear-foot and ankle procedures.

    • Training includes a strong emphasis on perioperative care, as well as management of the complicated surgical patient and diabetic limb salvage.

    • Training in Anesthesia and Wound Care in a Wound Care center was also provided.

  • Dr. Sunny J. Patel, DPM, FACPM, AAENS performed over one thousand surgical procedures and treated more than 3000 patients.

  • Dr. Sunny J. Patel, DPM, FACPM, AAENS served as the Chief Resident his third year.

  • Dr. Sunny J. Patel, DPM, FACPM, AAENS completed his training in June 2017 achieving board certification by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.
